Norman Bridwell - Never Give Up on Your Dreams
Ever heard of Clifford the Big Red Dog?
Kokomo native Norman Bridwell published his first book in the 1960s; the title was Clifford the Big Red Dog. Mr. Bridwell, both author and illustrator of that first book, has written over 100 Clifford books published by Scholastic.
Norman Bridwell was born in Kokomo, Indiana, the son of Vern and Leona Bridwell. Drawing was always his favorite activity growing up, and his illustrations can be found in the school newspaper and yearbook.
After graduation from Kokomo High School in 1945, Mr. Bridwell attended John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis. He then moved to New York with his young family and worked as a freelance illustrator.
Through the Clifford books, small town values have been shared with children around the world for more than 45 years. Norman Bridwell, still actively involved with Clifford and Scholastic, now resides on Martha’s Vineyard with his family.
The Kokomo-Howard County Public Library has a small collection of Bridwell family photos used to create an exhibit for Clifford’s Big Red Event, held at the library to celebrate Mr. Bridwell’s birthday in 2009. The exhibit was titled “Never Give Up on Your Dreams.” Mr. Bridwell provided the photos and has given his permission to the Genealogy & Local History Department allowing the photos to be included in the Howard County Memory Project’s digital collection.
